Someone was Hungry
My sweetpotato was doing fine and when I came home about six o'clock it had all it's leaves and vines. About 2 hours later when I went outside this is what I found. Apparently the groundhog was very hungry. I saw him just the other day as he was scurring across the yard. He is very well fed. About a week ago he dined on one of my large dahlias that was just getting ready to bloom. Considering the fact that he appears (from his rotund size) to have a large appetite I consider myself lucky that he has not done more damage.

Resident Groundhog
I saw my little buddy this morning. I had been concerned he was no longer around until I spotted him a few days ago. Today he came ambling down the hill to the ditch and scurried along. Looking a lot like a miniture bear as his short little legs carried him along. I was watching for him to get closer but he disappeared. I have a French drain that runs across my back yard and in a couple of places where there are walkways concrete slabs cover the drain and in a couple of places I have placed decorative wrought iron covers that help keep trash out of the drain and prevent someone from stepping in it. Well this drain is the perfect underground highway for Mr. Groundhog, especially the covered area. After he disappeared I continued to watch for him and then I spotted him. Wish I could have gotten a picture but I was too slow, or he was too quick, whichever I missed a great picture. He had his head poked up between one of the iron grates and the concrete slap that crosses the drain. I must admit he was quite silly looking and worth a good laugh.

Resident Ground Hog
My resident groundhog is just too funny, even when I find him sitting up nibbling
on my plants. He loves daisies and coneflowers. In the spring he’s not so rotund but before the summer is gone you really can’t tell if he’s running on those short little legs or just rolling along. Because I have a French drain that runs across the back yard and there are small “bridges” where the walks cross it he has a series of man-made tunnels that he can maneuver through. I come home from work to see a dark shadow scurrying up the ditch to duck under the bridge. He’s fat and sassy and on the move and all’s right in our little part of the world.
